1 Peter series
The “1 Peter” series is a 6 part visual exegesis based on the apostle Peter’s message to Christians to endure suffering (by giving of one’s self fully to God) because of a promised hope not yet fully realized. This series is intentionally designed using a fragile medium (oil pastels) overlaid on a small, rough support (canvas board). Redeemed humanity is bound in an uncomfortable relationship with the continuation around us until Jesus returns. Within that amalgamation a believer is to continue maintaining relational harmony with the people who share in this existence. The “1 Peter” series is a visual encouragement to imagine what this entails.
“1 Peter 1:13 - Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

Title: “1 Peter 3:7 - Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.”

Title: “1 Peter 3:1 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2when they see your respectful and pure conduct.”

“1 Peter 1:22 - Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart,”

Together as One
Title: "the community's song"
reclaimed pipe organ flutes (wood, metal)
This series is a visual exegesis of a letter found in the Bible from Paul to the Church at Colossae (Ch.3, v.12-17). Paul tells Christians “to be in Christ” which means to be compassionate and kind, to have humility, meekness and patience while practicing forgiveness. Through that, Christians can have peace and unity… ” And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity”.
William Wilberforce (English abolitionist who greatly contributed to the abolishment of the slave trade in the U.K. during the early 19th century), Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and César Chávez were all devout Christians who understood these words and while not living perfect lives not perfectly lived lives that were reflective of these truths. The elements of this work were once a part of a pipe organ located in our church. In their new life, they come together again in the elements of song, community, and most of all love to remind us of Paul’s words and point us towards the path of radical social change and justice. A Dream Relized?
In honor of the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's death, I created a guerrilla art installation for the evening. On April 4, 2008 I projected a bootleg video of the entire "I have a dream speech" along with audio during Phoenix's First Friday Art Walk on the front of Roosevelt Community Church. Thousands upon thousands of people converge on the arts districts for a monthly cultural gathering of art lovers, revilers, and gawkers. I was interested in seeing what the community's reaction would be. I asked people if they had ever watched the entire speech; almost all said no. I asked if people thought the dream was realized; almost all said no. However, almost all clapped and cheered at the end of Dr. King's speech. Was it hope or was it a dream realized?
"A Dream Realized?", audio+video installation/existing building/people, dimensions varied, April 2008. Photograph documentation of the installation was by Brenda Bombino (c). Special thanks to Bishop Ortega for the help and love.
